Mays Landing Man Pleads Guilty To Narcotics & Theft

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ.- On Friday, January 10, 2025, Tariq Smith, 20, of Mays Landing, New Jersey, appeared in Atlantic County Superior Court and pleaded guilty before Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Waldman to one count of Theft; one count of third-degree Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance; and third-degree Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance.

     In return for the guilty plea, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office will recommend that Smith be sentenced to a term of four years in New Jersey State Prison. The guilty pleas stem from three separate cases that occurred in Atlantic City in August 2023 and November 2023. After entering his guilty pleas, Judge Waldman accepted the pleas and scheduled Smith to be sentenced in Atlantic County Superior Court on February 18, 2025.

According To The Prosecutor’s Office

     According to Atlantic County Prosecutor William E. Reynolds, on August 13, 2023, members of the Atlantic City Police Department observed multiple individuals engaged in street-level hand-to-hand narcotics sales in the area of Tennessee and Central Avenues in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Upon his arrest, Police Officers found that Smith was in possession of heroin and fentanyl.

     On November 28, 2023, two individuals reported to Atlantic City Police Officers that a group had broken into the vehicle and stole items from the vehicle. During the investigation, Smith was identified as one of the suspects and was charged.

     On November 29, 2023, Smith was stopped by Atlantic City Police Officers and was found to have cocaine on his person. Smith was taken into custody and charged.
