Active Northeast D.C. Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

WASHINGTON, DC.- Today, January 14, 2025, D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith reported that agents of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau Force Investigation Team are continuing the investigation into an early Monday morning shooting that left three Police Officers injured and the suspect dead.
On Monday, January 13, 2025, shortly after 4:30 a.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Fifth District responded to a report of an armed man in the lobby of an apartment building located on the 300 Block of Florida Avenue in Northeast, D.C.
Police Officers Return Fire And Kill Suspect
Upon arrival, Police Officers observed the suspect, who fled into an elevator. Additional Police Officers responded to the scene to initiate a search for the suspect. Moments later, the suspect returned to the lobby. As Officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the male suspected fired his gun at Police Officers, and Officers returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.
Three Metropolitan Police Officers sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Two Police Officers were treated and have since been released. The third Officer remains hospitalized.
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services pronounced the suspect, later identified as Derrick Williams, 45, of Northeast, D.C., deceased at the scene. The suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene.
