Man Charged In Jersey City New Year’s Day Hit & Run

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Thursday, January 16, 2025, a 28-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and charged in connection with running down a woman early New Year’s Day morning and fleeing the scene, leaving her lying in the roadway seriously injured.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Thursday, Detectives of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit charged Matthew Small, 28, of Jersey City, New Jersey, with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury; Assault by Auto; and Endangering an Injured Victim.
Small Surrendered At The Prosecutor’s Office
Small was taken into custody after surrendering at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus, New Jersey. He was processed on the charges and released on a complaint summons pending his first appearance in Hudson County Central Judicial Processing Court, which has been scheduled for January 30, 2025.
According to the initial report, on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, shortly before 3:00 a.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle in the area of Communipaw and Marcy Avenues in the city.
Upon arrival, Police Officers and First Responders found a young woman, later identified as a 19-year-old Jersey City resident, lying in the roadway, suffering from severe upper-body injuries. The woman was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.
