CHARLOTTE, NC.- On Friday, a 34-year-old Statesville, North Carolina, man learned he would be well into his mid-forties when he is finally released after being sentenced to over a decade in federal prison for trafficking methamphetamine while on supervised release.

According to U.S. Attorney Dena J. King, on Friday, January 17, 2025, Russell Javon Linney, 34, of Statesville, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina and was sentenced to 135 months in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to the Distribution of Methamphetamine.

According To Charging Documents

According to the charging documents filed with the District Court, in January 2023, members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives launched an investigation into Linney’s narcotics trafficking activities. During the investigation, undercover federal agents made multiple purchases of methamphetamine from Linney.

During one of the narcotics buys, Linney sold nearly a pound of methamphetamine to an undercover agent in South Carolina. At that time, Linney was on federal supervised release for a firearms conviction in the Western District of North Carolina.

Following the narcotics buys, Linney was taken into custody and charged. In August 2024, Linney appeared in the U.S. District Court and pleaded guilty to the distribution of methamphetamine. During Friday’s sentencing hearing, Linney was returned to federal custody pending transfer to the Bureau of Prisons facility.
