BLUEFIELD, W.VA.- On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Savion Garcia, 24, a federal inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution McDowell, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Court Judge David A. Faber to 12 months, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for Possession of a Weapon by an Inmate at a Federal Prison.
According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and documents filed with the court, on October 19, 2023, an FCI McDowell Corrections Officer conducted a random search of Garcia’s prison cell.
During the search, the Corrections Officer found two handcrafted weapons, commonly known as “shanks,” on Garcia’s person. One was around a six-inch-long flat metal bar with cloth wrapped around one end as a handle. The other shank was a piece of metal just around seven inches long, with one end sharpened to a point and cloth wrapped around the other end as a handle.
Garcia admitted to possessing both shanks and further admitted that they were designed and intended to be used as weapons.
U.S. Attorney Thompson commended the investigative work of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons for the successful prosecution of Garcia.
