BOSTON, MA.- On Thursday, a 56-year-old Dominican national who has been residing illegally in the Boston, Massachusetts, area was sentenced to federal prison for his role as a leader in a large-scale drug trafficking organization that distributed deadly fentanyl and cocaine throughout southern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

On Thursday, January 23, 2025, Luis Alfonso Mejia-Diaz, also known as “El Bello,” 56, of the Dominican Republic, appeared in this U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge William G. According To Charging Documents Filed With The Court

According to U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and documents filed with the District Court, Mejia-Diaz was charged in October 2020 along with 14 others, following a three-year investigation into a large-scale multi-state narcotics trafficking operation that began in March 2017. During the investigation, investigators identified Mejia-Diaz as one of the operations major distributors of fentanyl and cocaine, who operated under his alias, El Bello.

El Bello served as a significant supply source for others in the conspiracy. During the investigation, investigators seized 991 grams of fentanyl intended for Mejia-Diaz. During his arrest in October 2020, investigators uncovered over a kilogram of fentanyl and a loaded firearm from a hidden compartment inside an air compressor in Mejia Diaz’s residence, in addition to a kilogram press from on top of the air compressor. Mejia-Diaz is the thirteenth defendant to be sentenced in this case.

U.S. Attorney Foley commended the investigative work of federal, local, and state law enforcement agencies that led to Mejia-Diaz’s successful prosecution.
