PHILADELPHIA, PA.- Last Thursday, an 80-year-old Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, man and convicted child sex offender learned he would probably die in federal prison after he was sentenced for possessing thousands of digital images and video files depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
According to U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero, on Thursday, January 23, 2025, Joseph Gallo, 80, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, appeared in the U.S. District for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Juan R. Sanchez 120 months in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to Possession of Child Pornography.
In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Sanchez ordered Gallo to pay $12,750 in restitution to his identified victims and $10,000 in additional special assessments.
According to the charging documents filed with the District Court, in March 2024, Gallo was charged by criminal information for Possession of Child Pornography as a second-time child sex offender. Gallo appeared in July 2024 in federal court in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and pleaded guilty to the charge.
Gallo Admits To Possessing Child Pornography
During his plea allocution, Gallo admitted that for more than three years, he stockpiled a collection of more than 18,000 digital images and video files depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of prepubescent and pubescent children.
At the time Gallo committed this offense, he was already a registered sex offender in the Megan’s Law national database, attending court-ordered sex offender treatment, and serving a sentence of supervised county probation following a 2015 conviction in the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas, for similar child pornography offenses.
“Gallo learned nothing from his first conviction and again started seeking out those abhorrent images,” said U.S. Attorney Romero. “Consumers of child pornography like him perpetuate the exploitation and trauma of innocent victims, which my office, HSI, and our partners simply won’t abide. We’ll hold accountable collectors of child sexual abuse material because protecting kids everywhere is paramount.”
