BECKLEY, W.VA.- On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Kayla Nicole Dent, 34, of Mount Hope, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Omar J. Aboulhosn to one count of Distribution of Fentanyl.
Following entering her guilty plea, Judge Aboulhosn accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for May 29, 2025, at which time Dent faces up to 20 years in federal prison, at least three years of supervised release, and a $1 million fine. At the time of sentencing, a U.S. District Court Judge will determine the term of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the offense and Dent’s prior criminal history.
According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and documents filed with the court, on January 23, 2024, Dent sold around 1.5 grams of fentanyl to a confidential informant for $140 from her Mount Hope home. During her plea hearing on Wednesday, Dent admitted to the court that she sold the fentanyl to the confidential informant and arranged the sale beforehand.
U.S. Attorney Thompson commended the investigative work of the Beckley/Raleigh Drug and Violent Crime Unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
