Waterbury Man Sentenced For Unlawful Possession Of A Firearm

HARTFORD, CT.- On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Anfernee D. Dancy, 28, of Waterbury, Connecticut, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Vernon D. Oliver to 46 months in federal prison, to be followed by 30 months of supervised release for being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, Convicted Felon.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Marc H. Silverman and documents filed with the District Court, on August 22, 2023, members of the Waterbury Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Sport Utility Vehicle operated by Dancy in Waterbury. As Police Officers approached the vehicle, Dancy reversed the Sport Utility Vehicle, crashing into the police vehicle.
Dancy then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. After a brief struggle with Police Officers, Dancy was taken into custody.
Police Find Handgun In Vehicle
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Police Officers found and seized a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, a quantity of crack cocaine, a digital scale, and $282 in U.S. currency.
Federal law prohibits a person with prior felony convictions from owning or possessing a firearm and ammunition. Dancy knew on August 22, 2023, he was prohibited from possessing the 9mm handgun due to prior felony convictions of first-degree burglary, risk of injury to children, and felony failure to appear.
Dancy has remained in federal custody since his arrest, and on October 7, 2024, he appeared in federal court and pleaded guilty to the charge.
