Spaniard Pleads Guilty To Illegal Entry Into The United States

BURLINGTON, VT.- On Monday, a 35-year-old man who is a citizen of Spain appeared in federal court in Burlington, Vermont, and pleaded guilty and was sentenced to time served for being unlawfully in the United States after being found walking late last week along a road in Derby, Vermont.

     According to Acting U.S. Michael P. Dresher and charging information filed in the criminal complaint, on Friday, January 31, 2025, shortly before 3:00 a.m., U.S. Border Patrol agents were advised that an individual was walking south toward the United States-Canadian international border near the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line, Vermont.

U.S. Border Patrol Agent Finds Bayarri-Barrera Walking

     Minutes later, a U.S. Border Patrol Agent located and stopped the individual, identified as Antonio Bayarri-Barrera, 38, who had crossed into the United States. The agent conducted an immigration inquiry, and in response to the agent’s questioning, Bayarri-Barrera admitted that he was a citizen of Spain and had just crossed the border near the library without first obtaining permission to do so. Bayarri-Barrera was taken into federal custody and charged.

     On Monday, February 3, 2025, Bayarri-Barrera appeared in the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont and pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle to one count of Unlawful Entry into the United States. After entering his guilty plea, Judge Doyle sentenced Bayarri-Barrera to time served. Bayarri-Barrera will be held in federal custody pending deportation proceedings.
