WASHINGTON, DC.- A 22-year-old Washington, D.C., man will be spending the next two decades in prison after being sentenced yesterday for sexually assaulting a senior citizen at knifepoint last summer while she was working in the backyard of Southeast, D.C., home.

On Monday, February 10, 2025, Darnell Peoples, 22, of Washington, D.C., in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Anthony C. Epstein to 240 months in prison, to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release after pleading guilty to one count of Sexual Abuse.

In addition to the terms of imprisonment and supervised release, Judge Epstein ordered Peoples to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.

According to U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr. and the negotiated plea agreement, on June 11, 2024, an elderly woman was working in her yard. Peoples approached the woman from behind, pulled out a knife, and ordered the woman to get on her knees. When the woman told Peoples that she could not get on her knees, Peoples grabbed her and threw her to the ground.

Peoples then pulled down his pants and exposed his penis, and pulled the woman’s head toward his penis, and forcefully inserted his penis into the woman’s mouth multiple times.

U.S. Attorney Martin commended Chief Pamela A. Smith and the men and women of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department for their investigative work, which led to Peoples’s arrest and successful prosecution.
