Hackensack Woman Charged With Embezzling Money From Employer

HACKENSACK, NJ.- On Thursday, following an investigation, a 64-year-old Hackensack, New Jersey, woman was taken into and charged in connection with stealing nearly half a million dollars from her former employer during a two-year embezzlement scheme.

     According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, in April 2024, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit was contacted regarding an alleged theft of funds from a Bergen County business, and an investigation was launched. 

Investigators Uncover A Nearly Half A Million Dollar Theft

     During the investigation, Detectives uncovered that between July 2021 and lasting through November 2023, while employed at the business, Elena Currie, 64, of Hackensack, New Jersey, a former employee, performed 398 unauthorized Zelle money transfers from a business bank account to her personal bank account totaling $451,000.

     Accordingly, on Thursday, February 13, 2025, Currie was taken into custody at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in Paramus, New Jersey, and formally charged with one count of second-degree Theft. She was processed on the charge and released on a summons complaint, pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.
