D.C. Man Sentenced For A Sexual Assault Aboard Metro Train

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Friday, a 37-year-old Washington, D.C. man learned he would be spending the next 45 months in federal prison after being sentenced for preventing a woman from exiting a Metro train traveling from Maryland to Washington, D.C, while he sexually abused her by exposing and self-gratifying himself in April 2023.

    On Friday, February 14, 2025, Anthony Garner, 37, of Washington, D.C., appeared in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Errol Arthur to 45 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty on July 10, 2024, to a charge of Sexual Abuse in the third-degree.

     In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Arthur ordered Garner to register for ten years as a sex offender in the national database.

     According to U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin and documents filed with the district court, shortly around 9:30 a.m. on April 16, 2023, members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Metro Transit Police responded to the Gallery Place Metro station after receiving a report of a sexual assault of a female passenger.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers encountered a woman who stated she had boarded the Green Line train at Suitland station and sat down. At the same time, a man also boarded the train and sat directly across from her. The man, identified as Garner, then sat next to her when she noticed his penis was exposed. When the woman motioned to other passengers that Garner was masturbating, he got up and moved away, claiming he was just fixing his pants.

     As the train continued and approached “‘Enfant Plaza Metro station, Garner again sat next to the woman and masturbated, at which time the woman tried to get the attention of another passenger on the train. When the woman and another female passenger attempted to walk past Garner, he blocked their path and stated, “You can get off, but she isn’t going anywhere. You’re not going anywhere until I bust a nut.”

     Garner let the other female passenger go but held on to the woman, grabbed her butt, and refused to let her leave the train. The woman continued to try to get off the train, but Garner forced her to stay on board while he continued to assault her.

     At one point, when other passengers observed what was happening, Garner lied and stated the woman was his lady. As the train pulled into the Fort Totten metro train station, Garner again refused to let the woman leave, with his penis exposed, ultimately ejaculating on her. When the train pulled into the next station, both the woman and Garner exited the train.

     The woman immediately reported the assault to the station manager, who called the Metro Transit Police Department. Garner boarded a train on the other platform, going in the opposite direction.

     Metro Transit Police Officers were able to locate Garner on a train at Gallery Place Metro, where he was identified by the woman and placed under arrest, and has been in custody ever since.
