Jersey City Man Sentenced For Role In 2022 Light Rail Station Stabbing Death

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Friday, a 40-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey man was sentenced to nearly two decades in New Jersey State Prison for his role in the stabbing death of a 49-year-old Jersey City man that occurred on the platform of a Jersey City Light Rail station back in January 2022.

     According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Friday, February 21, 2025, Anthony Bell, 40, of Jersey City, appeared in Hudson County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Nesle Rodriguez to eighteen years in State Prison, after pleading guilty in September 2024, to one count of first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter.

Judge Orders Sentence Subject The No Early Release Act

     Judge Rodriguez ordered the sentence to be subject to the No Early Release Act, which will require Bell to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole.

     The guilty plea and sentence stem from an incident that began on Friday, January 28, 2022, when shortly after 11:30 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department and the New Jersey Transit Police responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting an injured individual on the platform of the Danforth Avenue Light Rail Station, in Jersey City.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Kenneth Brown, 49, of Jersey City, New Jersey, with an apparent stab wound to his chest. Mr. Brown was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where, despite life-saving measures by doctors, Mr. Brown succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased an hour later.

     During the ensuing investigation, Detectives were able to identify Bell as the individual responsible for the stabbing death of Mr. Brown.
