Salvadorian National & Wanted For Double Murder, Charged With Unlawful Reentry

NEWARK, NJ.- A 28-year-old El Salvadorian national who is wanted in El Salvador after being convicted and sentenced for a double murder has been arrested and charged with illegal reentry into the United States by a previously deported alien.
On Friday, February 28, 2025, Cesar Eliseo Sorto-Amaya, 28, of El Salvador, residing in the Essex County, New Jersey area, made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jose R. Almonte in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey after being charged with one count of Illegal Reentry into the United States by a Previously Deported Alien. Judge Almonte ordered Sorto-Amaya to remain detained pending trial.
According To The U.S. Attorney’s Office
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna and charging information filed in the criminal complaint, since 2015, Sorto-Amaya has been deported from the United States on three separate occasions, including one time after being convicted of unlawful possession of a weapon in Union County Superior Court, in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
In April 2024, Sorto-Amaya was convicted in absentia in El Salvador for a double aggravated murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
If convicted on the charge of illegal reentry into the United States by a previously deported alien convicted of an aggravated felony, Sorto-Amaya faces up to 20 years in federal prison and immediate deportation after any sentence imposed.
