
Newark Officer Killed, Another Critically Injured In Essex County Shooting

NEWARK, NJ.- A Newark Police Officer was killed, and another remains hospitalized in critical condition after the two were struck by gunfire after the two officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the City’s North Ward.
According to the initial reports, on Friday, March 7, 2025, shortly after 6:30 p.m., the two Police Officers were responding to a ShotSpotter Activation that detected nearly two dozen rounds being fired at the intersection of Broadway and Carteret Street in the City’s North Ward.
Two Newark Police Officers Struck By Gunfire
Upon arriving at the scene, one of the Police Officers was struck in the head by a bullet and was immediately transported by fellow Police Officers to University Hospital, where he later tragically to his injury and was pronounced deceased. The second Police Officer was also transported to University Hospital and remains in critical but stable condition.
Police have reported that three suspects have been taken into custody, including a 14-year-old boy in connection with the shooting.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said he had been updated on an incident involving the shooting of the Newark Police Officers and urged people to “pray for these officers, their families, and all are men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to keep us safe.”
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has scheduled a press conference for 10:00 a.m. today.
