Ecuadorian Man Sentenced For Human Smuggling

ALBANY, NY.- On Thursday, March 13, 2025, Edgar Placencia-Guaillas, 22, an Ecuadorian national illegally in the State of New York, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York and was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to Alien Smuggling; and Conspiracy to Commit Alien Smuggling.

     According to Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Hanlon and charging documents filed with the District Court, Placencia-Guaillas, an Ecuadorian national who unlawfully entered the United States in 2022, admitted as part of his plea agreement that on August 25, 2024, he traveled to the northern border in Chateaugay, New York, where he smuggled two individuals, one from Mexico and the other from the Dominican Republic into the United States for monetary gain.

Placencia-Guaillas Admits To Smuggling Illegal Immigrants

     During his plea allocation, Placencia-Guaillas further admitted that he had smuggled other individuals across the border at different times.

     Upon completion of his federal term of imprisonment, Placencia-Guaillas will be taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation proceedings and will be removed from the United States.

     Acting U.S. Attorney Hanlon commended the investigative work of the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol for the successful prosecution of Placencia-Guaillas.
