Police Charge Man In December 2024 Northeast D.C. Moped-Jacking

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Tuesday, a 22-year-old Washington, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with a strongarm carjacking of a moped that occurred on December 30, 2025, in Northeast, D.C.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Monday, December 30, 2024, shortly before 5:00 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Northeast District responded to a report of a carjacking on Benning Road in Northeast, D.C.
Upon arrival, Police Officers learned from the victim that he was approached by a suspect while riding his moped on the 1600 Block of Benning Road in Northeast, D.C. The suspect attacked the victim, forcing him off his moped, and then fled on the victim’s moped. The moped has since been recovered.
During the ensuing investigation, Detectives identified Derrick Curtis, 22, of Northeast, D.C., as the suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Detectives located Curtis, who, pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court, was taken into custody and charged with one count of Carjacking. Curtis was processed on the charge and remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility, pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia.
