Investigation Underway Into The Death Of An Inmate At The Hudson County Correctional Facility

KEARNY, NJ.- The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General are continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 63-year-old male inmate, who was found unresponsive inside his cell Friday afternoon at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny, New Jersey.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Friday, March 21, 2025, shortly after 12:15 p.m., Corrections Officers at the Hudson County Correctional Facility located an unresponsive man, later identified as Derrick Ellis, 63, of Jersey City, New Jersey, in his cell in the medical unit of the facility.

Corrections Officers and onsite medical personnel immediately rendered medical aid. Mr. Ellis was then immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced deceased around 1:20 p.m.
Mr. Ellis’ death remains under investigation by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and investigators from the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.
