PLAINFIELD, NJ.- On Thursday, March 20, 2025, following a months-long investigation, a 62-year-old Piscataway, New Jersey, woman was taken into custody and charged in connection with fatally running down a woman in August 2024, in Plainfield, New Jersey, and fleeing the scene leaving the woman to die in the roadway.

According to Union County Prosecutor Willam A. Daniel, Shernice Benbow, 62, of Piscataway, was taken into custody and formally charged with one count of second-degree Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death; and third-degree Endangering an Injured Victim in connection with the death of Jennifer Harris, 67, of Plainfield, New Jersey.

The charges stem from an investigation that began on August 30, 2024, when members of the Plainfield Police Department responded to multiple 911 Emergency Calls reporting a woman being struck by a motor vehicle on the 400 Block of East Front Street in the City.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found a woman, later identified as Jennifer Harris, 67, who had succumbed to injuries after being struck by a motor vehicle. Ms. Harris was pronounced deceased at the scene. During the initial investigation, Responding Police Officers and Detectives learned that Ms. Harris was struck by a motor vehicle that fled the scene.

Detectives Were Able To Identify Suspect

Following a nearly seven-month investigation, Detectives of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, in conjunction with the Plainfield Police Department, were able to identify the vehicle and Ms. Benbow as the driver of the vehicle at the time it struck Ms. Harris.

Union County Prosecutor Daniel states, “While this arrest does not bring Ms. Harris back, we hope it brings some solace to her loved ones. I commend the dedicated efforts of investigators from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and the Plainfield Police Department, who worked tirelessly on this case.”

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
