PATERSON, NJ.- On Monday, March 24, 2025, an 18-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with the shooting death of a 28-year-old Paterson man that occurred during the late afternoon hours of Saturday, March 15, 2025, in the City of Paterson.

According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Davon White, 18, of Paterson, New Jersey, was formally charged on Monday with one count of first-degree Murder; first-degree Conspiracy to Commit Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

White was processed on the charges and was remanded to the custody of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, pending future court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court in Paterson, New Jersey. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion with the court to detain White pending trial.

The charges stem from an investigation by Detectives that learned when, on March 15, 2025, shortly before 5:30 p.m., a Hyundai Elantra pulled up to the intersection of Market and Pennington Streets near the Roberto Clemente Elementary School in the City of Paterson. The individuals exited the Elantra and began firing with handguns. The target of the shooting, Abel Angeles-Vargas, 28, of Paterson, New Jersey, was struck multiple times.

Mr. Angeles-Vargas was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased on arrival.

The ensuing investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department were able to identify one of the shooters as White, who participated in Mr. Angeles-Vargas’ death.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with additional information regarding the shooting death of Mr. Angeles-Vargas is asked to contact the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-370-PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org. All calls will be kept confidential.
