MAURICE RIVER, NJ.- On Thursday, March 27, 2025, following an investigation, Levon Woods, 25, of Atlantic City, New Jersey, was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with driving drunk and causing a motor vehicle collision that occurred during the early morning hours of February 22, 2025, in Maurice River Township, New Jersey, that claimed the lives of a 57-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman.

According to Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, shortly after 4:00 a.m., members of the New Jersey State Police responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle collision near milepost 19.4 on County Route 522, Millville-Mays Landing Road in Maurice Township.

Upon arrival, State Troopers found a two-vehicle head-on collision in the roadway. During the initial investigation, State Troopers learned that a vehicle being driven by Woods crossed over into the oncoming lane and crashed head-on into a vehicle occupied by Thomas Splinter, 57, and Nancy Orellana-Splinter, 29, both of Mays Landing, New Jersey, causing the deaths of both.

Investigation Leads To Arrest And Charges

During the ensuing investigation, Detectives determined that Woods was driving under the influence, which led to the collision. On Thursday, March 27, 2025, Woods surrendered himself to State Troopers at the New Jersey State Police Port Norris Station, where he was formally charged with two counts of second-degree Vehicular Homicide; third-degree Strict Liability Vehicular Homicide; and second-degree Violation of Law Intended to Protect Public Safety.

Woods was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Cumberland County Jail, pending future court proceedings in Cumberland County Superior Court in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
