Police Charge Young Teen Girl With Firing Handgun During Dispute

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Friday, March 28, 2025, a 13-year-old Hyattsville, Maryland, girl was taken into custody and charged in connection with a Wednesday altercation that turned violent when she pulled out a firearm and shot at the victim in Northeast, D.C.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, shortly before 4:00 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Sixth District responded to a report of a shooting on the 5600 Block of East Capitol Street in Northeast, D.C.
Police Officers Learn Teen Girl Fired During Fight
Upon arrival, Police Officers encountered a victim who reported that they were involved in a verbal altercation with a teen girl that turned physical, leading to the teen girl pulling out a handgun and shooting at them. Then, the girl fled the scene. The victim was not struck by gunfire or injured in the altercation.
On Friday, March 28, 2025, after being identified as the suspect, the 13-year-old Hyattsville, Maryland, girl surrendered herself to Police Officers at a Metropolitan Police Department District Station. The teen girl was formally charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. She was processed on the charge and released to her guardian, pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia’s Family Division.
