PITTSBURGH, PA.- A 66-year-old Honduran man residing illegally in the Western District of Pennsylvania is facing up to 10 years in federal prison after being charged with multiple federal immigration and Social Security offenses.

On Friday, March 28, 2025, a Federal Grand Jury for the Western District of Pennsylvania returned a nine-count indictment charging Antonio Mejia-Sarmiento, 66, of Honduras, with violating federal immigration statutes and four counts of federal fraud by making false statements.

According To Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti and charging information unsealed in the indictment, Mejia-Sarmiento was found in the Western District of Pennsylvania after being deported and removed from the United States on separate times between 1996 and 2016, including after being convicted of a felony on the later date.

The indictment further alleges that Mejia-Sarmiento made false statements to the Social Security Administration on four different dates between May 2024 and February 2025 by possessing and using the identification of another person.

Upon a finding of guilt, Mejia-Sarmiento faces a maximum of up to 10 years in federal prison, at least one year of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine, or both. The actual term of imprisonment at sentencing will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge based on the seriousness of the offenses and Mejia-Sarmiento’s prior criminal history.

Upon completion of his federal term imprisonment, Mejia-Sarmiento will face immediate deportation proceedings and be removed from the United States.
