Police Charged Teen With The Shooting Death Of  Elmwood Park Man

PATERSON, NJ.- On Monday, March 31, 2025, a 17-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, boy was taken into custody and charged In connecting with the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old Elmwood Park, New Jersey, man that occurred in the afternoon hours of March 22, 2025, in the City of Paterson.

     According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, the juvenile male was charged with acts of juvenile delinquency with Crimes of first-degree Murder; first-degree Conspiracy to Commit Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

The Teen Will Remain Custody Pending Court Proceedings

     The teen was processed on the charges and was ordered detained pending future Court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court Family Part, Juvenile Division in Paterson, New Jersey.

     The arrest and charged Stem from an investigation that began on Saturday, March 22, 2025, when shortly after 5:00 p.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to reports of Gunfire near the intersection of 12th Avenue and East 24th Street in the City of Paterson.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Jah Zyer Montgomery, 21, of Elmwood Park, New Jersey, having sustained multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. Mr. Montgomery was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Montgomery tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital.

     During the ensuing Investigation, Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Investigations Unit and the Paterson Police Department were able to identify the 17-year-old boy as one of the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting of Mr. Montgomery. After being identified, the teen was located and taken into custody without incident on Monday.

     The investigation remains ongoing.
