NORTH BERGEN, NJ.- Today, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez reported that the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, and the North Bergen Police Department are continuing the investigation into an early Thursday morning apartment fire that tragically claimed the lives of an 88-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman.

On Thursday, April 3, 2025, just shortly after 1:00 a.m., members of the North Bergen Police Department and North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a fire at Cullum Apartments, a multi-story apartment building located at 6299 Grand Avenue in North Bergen. Upon arrival, Police Officers and First Responders encountered fire and heavy smoke within a tenth-floor apartment unit.

During fire suppression, Firefighters discovered two injured individuals, a man identified as Reynaldo Tatis, 88, and a 72-year-old woman whose identity is pending notification of next of kin. Both victims succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Cause and Manner of Death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police have reported that two North Bergen Police Officers sustained minor injuries and were transported to Hackensack Medical Center for treatment. Additionally, twenty-seven residents of the apartment building were displaced as a result of the fire.

Although the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature, the investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is being urged to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office at (201) 915-1345.
