NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ.- On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone reported that a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, both of New Brunswick, New Jersey, have been formally charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old New Brunswick boy that occurred during the early evening of Monday, March 31, 2025, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Both teens have been charged with acts of juvenile delinquency with first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and first-degree Conspiracy to Commit Murder.

According to the initial reports, on Monday, March 31, 2025, just shortly after 6:30 p.m., members of the New Brunswick Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a shooting in the area of Lee Street and Rutgers Avenue in the City of New Brunswick.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found a 16-year-old New Brunswick boy suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. The teen was immediately transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where, despite life-saving efforts, the teen succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Detectives Identify Two Teens As Suspects

The ensuing investigation by Detective Brandt Gregus of the New Brunswick Police Department and Detective Javier Morillo of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office led to the identification of the 17-year-old boy and the 16-year-old boy as the suspects and the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting of the teen.

Accordingly, on Thursday, April 3, 2025, the 17-year-old boy was taken into custody and charged. The teen was processed on the juvenile charges and was remanded to the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center pending future court proceedings in Middlesex County Superior Court Family Division. It was not reported if the 16-year-old defendant was taken into custody and formally charged.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and as in adult cases, a juvenile defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
