Huntington Convicted Felon Pleads Guilty To Federal Gun Crime

HUNTINGTON, W.VA.- A 25-year-old Huntington, West Virginia, man will be facing up to 15 years in federal prison when sentenced after pleading guilty on Monday to possessing a semi-automatic handgun as a convicted felon.

     On Monday, April 21, 2025, Khali Marquise Barnes, 25, of Huntington, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Chambers to being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm.

According To Charging Documents

     According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston and charging documents filed with the District Court, on January 9, 2023, members of the Huntington Police Department with assistance of Sheriff’s Deputies of the Cabell County Sheriff’s Office conducted a home compliance check at Barnes’ Huntington, West Virginia home.

     During the check, Police Officers found a loaded Glock 19 9mm semi-automatic handgun in Barnes’ bed. Barnes admitted to Police Officers that the gun belonged to him.

     Federal law prohibits a person previously convicted of a felony from owning or possessing a firearm and ammunition. Barnes knew when he possessed the handgun on January 9, 2023, he was prohibited due to his prior felony conviction of conspiracy to commit first-degree armed robbery in Cabell County Circuit Court in August od 2021.

     Following entering his guilty plea on Monday, Judge Chambers accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for July 28, 2025. At that time, Barnes faces up to 15 years in federal prison, a term of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. At sentencing, a U.S. District Court Judge will determine the term of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the offense and Barnes’ prior criminal history.
