BURLINGTON, VT.- A 57-year-old Canadian national is facing up to two years in federal prison after being charged by criminal complaint with illegally reentering the United States by a previously deported alien.

On Monday, April 21, 2025, Julio Pinto, 57, of Canada, was taken into custody and charged with one count of Illegal Reentry into the United States by a Previously Deported Alien. On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Pinto made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle in Federal Court in Burlington, Vermont, and pleaded not guilty. Following entering his plea, Judge Doyle ordered Pinto to remain detained pending trial.

According To The U.S. Attorney’s Office

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Michael P. Dresher and charing information filed in the criminal complaint, Pinto had been previously served with an Expedited Order of Removal in October 2023 and thereafter removed from the United States. As part of the order, Pinto was barred from entering the United States for five years.

Nevertheless, Pinto illegally crossed the United States-Canada International Border on April 21, 2025, and was found at a gas station in Alburgh, Vermont. After being discovered, Pinto was immediately taken into custody by agents of the U.S. Border Patrol.

If convicted at trial, Pinto faces up to 24 months in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. At sentencing upon a finding of guilt, a U.S. District Court Judge will determine the term of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the offense and Pinto’s prior criminal history. Upon completion of any sentence imposed, Pinto will face immediate deportation proceedings and will be removed from the United States.

Acting U.S. Attorney Dresher commended the investigative work of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which resulted in the apprehension of Pinto and led to the filing of charges.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
