Man Charged With Murder For The Shooting Death Of Garfield Man

PATERSON, NJ.- On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, a 21-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with fatally gunning down a 21-year-old Garfield, New Jersey, man that occurred on March 22, 2025, in the City of Paterson.

     According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, following an investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office in conjunction with the Paterson Police Department, Jihad Abdullah, 21, of Paterson, New Jersey, was formally charged on Wednesday, with first-degree Murder; first-degree Conspiracy Commit Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

Charges Stem From Investigation

     On March 22, 2025, just shortly after 5:00 p.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of 12th Avenue and East 24th Street in the City of Paterson. 

     Upon arrival on the scene, Police Officers found a man, identified as Jah’Zyer Montgomery, 21, of Garfield, New Jersey, lying on the ground, having sustained multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. Mr. Montgomery was immediately transported by Paterson Fire and Emergency Medical Service to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Montgomery succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving.

     The subsequent investigation led to Abdullah being identified as one of the individuals involved in the shooting. On Wednesday, Abdullah was taken into custody without incident and charged. Following being processed on the charges, Abdullah was transferred to the custody of the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, pending transfer to an area county jail to await court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court.

     If convicted at trial, Abdullah faces a mandatory minimum of 30 years and up to life in New Jersey State Prison.
