BURLINGTON, VT.- A 34-year-old Ecuadorian national is facing up to five years in federal prison after being charged last Saturday by federal criminal complaint with transporting illegal Mexican and Venezuelan migrants after crossing across the United States-Canada border.

On Saturday, April 19, 2025, Manuel Rolando Meza-Cambo, 34, of Los Rios Province, Ecuador, illegally in the United States, was formally charged by criminal complaint with Transporting Illegal Aliens. On Monday, April 22, 2025, Meza-Cambo made his initial appearance in Federal Court in Burlington, Vermont, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle and ordered detained pending trial.

According To The U.S. Attorney’s Office

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Michael P. Dresher and charging information filed in the criminal complaint, Meza-Cambo was attempting to pick up four illegal aliens along Richford Road in Richford, Vermont, in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025.

A member of the U.S. Border Patrol spotted Meza-Cambo’s minivan before he could pick up the aliens and began to follow the minivan. After the minivan came to a stop in the middle of the road, Border Patrol agents found two Mexican nationals and two Venezuelan nationals near the side of Richford Road. These four illegal aliens are being prosecuted separately for illegal entry into the United States.

If convicted at trial, Meza-Cambo faces up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. When sentenced upon a finding of guilt, a U.S. District Court Judge will determine the term of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the offense and Meza-Cambo’s prior criminal history.

Upon completion of any sentence imposed, Meza-Cambo will face immediate deportation proceedings and will be removed from the United States.
