Bergen County Man Charged In Roxbury, New Jersey Fatal Crash

ROXBURY, NJ.- A 33-year-old East Rutherford, New Jersey, man is facing up to ten years in New Jersey State Prison after being taken into custody and charged in connection with allegedly driving intoxicated and killing his passenger in a Monday morning single motor vehicle crash in Roxbury Township, New Jersey.

     According to Morris County Prosecutor Robert J.Carroll, on Monday, April 28, 2025, shortly around 5:30 a.m., members of the Roxbury Township Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Howard Boulevard and Ledgewood Road/ Mt. Arlington Road in the Township.

Police Officers Find Van That Crashed Into A Tree

     Upon arrival, Police Officers and First Responders discovered that a 2003 Chevy Express van had crashed into a tree. The front passenger of the van, identified as Esmeralda Melchar, 30, of East Rutherford, New Jersey, sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the van, identified as Alexander Serrano, 33, of East Rutherford, New Jersey, exhibited signs of being under the influence and was transported to Morristown Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

     After being treated at the hospital, Serrano was transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility, where he was formally charged with one count of second-degree Vehicular Homicide and issued motor vehicle summonses. Following being charged, Serrano made his first appearance in Morris County Superior Court and was released on bail monitoring conditions pending future court proceedings in Morris County Superior Court.
