HUNTINGTON, W.VA.- On Monday, a 29-year-old Detroit, Michigan, man learned he would be spending nearly the next five years after being sentenced for selling deadly fentanyl to a confidential informant back in August 2022 in the Southern District of West Virginia.

On Monday, May 5, 2025, Devontay Brian Johnson, 29, of Detroit, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Chambers to 57 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, after previously pleading guilty to one count of Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Fentanyl.

According To Charging Documents

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston and charging documents filed in the District Court, on August 3, 2022, Johnson, within the Southern District of West Virginia, sold around 20 grams of fentanyl to a confidential informant while parked in a vehicle along Wilson Place in Huntington, West Virginia, during a controlled buy under the observation of law enforcement investigators.

During the transaction, the confidential informant reported to investigators that Johnson held what appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle.

Acting U.S. Attorney Johnston commended the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the successful prosecution of Johnson.
