Police Charge Man In January 2025 Southeast Navy Shooting Death

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Monday, May 12, 2025, a 23-year-old Southeast D.C. man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a man that occurred in late January 2025 in Southeast, D.C.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Thursday, January 30, 2025, shortly after 8:30 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s First District responded to reports of a shooting on the 900 Block of M Street in the Navy Yard neighborhood in Southeast, D.C.
Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Nico Rector, 36, of Southeast, D.C., unresponsive, having succumbed from multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Rector was pronounced deceased at the scene by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
During the ensuing investigation, D.C. Homicide Branch Detectives were able to identify Derrick Stokes-Seegars, 23, of Northeast, D.C., as the gunman and the individual responsible for Mr. Rector’s death. Accordingly, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Police Locate And Charge Stokes-Seegars With Murder
On Monday, May 12, 2025, members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Stokes-Seegars. He was transported to the Homicide Branch and formally charged with one count of second-degree Murder While Armed. Stokes-Seegars was processed on the charge and was remanded to the DC Central Detention Facility, pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia.
