CHARLESTON, W.VA.- On Monday, May 12, 2025, Jason Douglas MaComber, 52, of St. Albans, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Joseph R. Goodwin to 36 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to a federal firearms violation.

MaComber previously appeared in Federal Court in Charleston, West Virginia, and pleaded guilty before Judge Goodwin to being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm.

MaComber Unlawfully Possessed Sawed-Off Shotgun

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston and charging documents filed with the District Court, on June 12, 2023, Macomber, while in St. Albans, West Virginia, was found in possession of a Remington Wingmaster 12-gauge shotgun with a sawed-off barrel.

Federal law prohibits a person with a previous felony conviction from owning or possessing a firearm and ammunition. MaComber knew when he possessed the shotgun on June 12, 2023, that he was a prohibited person due to his prior felony convictions for possession of dangerous drugs/controlled substances in November 2007, possession of a firearm by a felon in June 2014, and illegal firearm transportation in July 2019, all in San Bernardino, California Superior Court.

In Handing down the sentence on Monday, Judge Goodwin noted MaComber’s long and extensive criminal history, which includes a total of 20 felony convictions. Additionally, Judge Goodwin noted that the sawed-off shotgun is illegal, and was not registered in the national firearms database.

Acting U.S. Attorney Johnston commended the investigative work of the St. Albans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
