D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Investigating D.C. Jail Fatal Stabbing

WASHINGTON, DC.- Detectives of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding an apparent altercation that turned deadly inside the D.C. Central Detention Facility, leaving a 29-year-old Southeast, D.C. man dead from stab wounds, that occurred during afternoon hours on May 1, 2025.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Monday, May 1, 2025, shortly around 2:30 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s First District responded to a report of a stabbing at the D.C. Central Detention Facility located on the 1900 Block of D Street in Southeast, D.C.
Police And Jail Official Find Man Dead Inside Jail
Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Carlos Shelley, 29, of Southeast, D.C., an inmate who had succumbed to multiple stab wounds. Mr. Shelley was pronounced deceased by DC Fire and Emergency and Emergency Medical Services inside the jail.
During the initial investigation, Police Officers determined that Mr. Shelley was involved with an unidentified fellow inmate, who stabbed him multiple times.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch is leading the investigation into this incident.
