HUNTINGTON, W.VA.- A 52-year-old Chesapeake, Ohio, man learned he will be spending the next five years in federal prison after being sentenced on Monday after West Virginia State Troopers found methamphetamine inside his car during a traffic stop in Ashton, West Virginia, in August 2024.
On Monday, May 12, 2025, Gary Neal Abbott, 52, of Chesapeake, Ohio, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Chambers to 60 months in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release on his previously entered guilty plea for Possession with Intent to Distribute 50 Grams or More of a Substance Containing Methamphetamine.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa G. Johnston and charging documents filed with the District Court, on August 9, 2024, West Virginia State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle being operated by Abbott in Ashton, West Virginia.
During Traffic Stop, State Troopes Find Drugs In Abbott’s Car
During the traffic stop, Abbott informed State Troopers that he had a firearm in his vehicle and also told Troopers there may be marijuana and “ice” or methamphetamine in the car as well. During a consent search of the vehicle, Troopers found a black bag that contained around 8.7 ounces of methamphetamine.
Additionally, Troopers uncovered small amounts of methamphetamine and marijuana in a separate container and a Glock Gen4 .45-caliber pistol in the front seat of the vehicle. At that time, Abbott was taken into custody and charged.
Acting U.S. Attorney Johnston commended the West Virginia State Police’s investigative work, which led to Abbott’s successful prosecution.
