Brazilian Man Pleads Guilty To Illegal Reentry & Selling Bogus Green Cards

BOSTON, MA.- A 40-year-old Brazilian national illegally residing in Woburn, Massachusetts, will be facing up to 32 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to unlawfully reentering the United States as well as selling fake social security cards and green cards. 

     On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Liene Tavares DeBarros, 40, a Brazilian national illegally residing in Woburn, Massachusetts, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper to two counts of Unlawful Transfer of a Document or Authentication Feature; and one count of Illegal Reentry into the United States by a Previously Deported Alien.

     Following entering his guilty plea, Judge Casper accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for June 26, 2025. At that time, Tavares DeBarrios faces up to 15 years in federal prison, at least three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine on each count of unlawful transfer of document or authentication feature. On the charge of illegal reentry into the United States, Tavares DeBarrios faces up to two years in federal prison, one year of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. 

     At sentencing, a U.S. District Court Judge will determine the term of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the offenses and Tavares DeBarrios’ prior criminal history. Upon completing any imposed sentence, Tavares DeBarrios will face immediate deportation proceedings and be removed from the country.

     According to U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and charging documents filed with the District Court, law enforcement was notified that Tavares DeBarrios was selling counterfeit identification documents. During the subsequent investigation, an undercover law enforcement investigator contacted Tavares BeBarrios requesting his services.

     Subsequently, in October 2024, Tavares DeBarrios sold a counterfeit Social Security Number Card and a Green Card to an undercover investigator in exchange for $250. Later, in December 2024, Tavares DeBarrios sold two more counterfeit Social Security cards and two Green Cards to another undercover investigator in exchange for $500.

     Following the two undercover purchases of the fraudulent documents, Tavares DeBarrios was arrested and charged by criminal complaint in March 2025.
