Cape May Man Sentenced For Domestic Violence Crimes

CAPE MAY, NJ.- A 33-year-old Cape May, New Jersey, man, and convicted domestic abuser learned he would be spending the next eight years in State Prison for repeatedly physically abusing, including nearly strangling to death his then-pregnant fiance.

     According to Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland, John P. Linnington, 33, of Cape May, was initially charged on April 11, 2022, and formally indicted on October 17, 2023, in conjunction with an investigation conducted by Detectives of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit. After it had been reported that Liinington had committed multiple acts of domestic violence against his then-pregnant fiance.

According To Prosecutor Sutherland

     According to Prosecutor Sutherland, on March 21, 2025, Linnington appeared in Cape May County Superior Court and pleaded guilty before Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury to first-degree Attempted Murder; second-degree Aggravated Assault on a Domestic Violence Victim by Strangulation; and third-degree Contempt of a Judicial Order.

     On Friday, May 16, 2025, Judge DeLury sentenced Linnington to eight years in New Jersey State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which requires Linnington to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge DeLury ordered Linnington to have no contact with his victim and serve an additional five years of parole supervision upon his release from prison.

     Prosecutor Sutherland stated, “The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office will always pursue and prosecute perpetrators of Domestic Violence to the fullest extent of the law to ensure victims receive justice.”
