Elderly Man Tragically Succumbs To Injuries Sustained In Jersey City Fire

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- A 97-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey, man tragically succumbed to the injuries he sustained in last Thursday’s Jersey City apartment fire.

     According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, shortly after 1:30 p.m., the Jersey City Fire Department members and the Jersey City Police Department responded to 911 Emergency Calls reporting a fire at 318 York Street in Jersey City.

Mr. Von Chorba Dies Of Injuries On Sunday

     Upon arrival, First Responders observed heavy smoke and fire coming from a basement apartment. During fire suppression, Firefighters found an injured man, later identified as Albert Van Chorba, 97, of Jersey City, inside his apartment with serious injuries. Mr. Von Chorba was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center and later transported to the burn unit at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, where, despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Von Chorba succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly after noon on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

     During the ensuing investigation, Investigators of the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department determined that the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature, and foul play is not suspected.
