Bergen County Fire Inspector Charged With Falsifying Records

ELMWOOD PARK, NJ.- On Thursday, a 43-year-old Elmwood Park, New Jersey, man employed as a Fire Inspector for the Borough of Elmwood Park was taken into custody and charged in connection with tampering and falsifying public records in April 2025.

     According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, on April 16, 2025, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Confidential Investigations Unit received information regarding the alleged tampering and falsifying of public records associated with the Borough of Elmwood Park Fire Prevention Bureau. 

     During an investigation, Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office uncovered that around April 14, 2025, Mark S. Hettinger, 43, of Elmwood Park, New Jersey, acting in his capacity as a Fire Inspector for the Borough of Elmwood Park, falsely completed a Fire Inspection Report and a Fire Inspection Certificate.

Hettinger Charged On Thursday

     Accordingly, as a result of the investigation, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Hettinger was taken into custody and formally charged with one count of third-degree Tampering with Public Records or Information; and one count of Falsifying or Tampering with Records.

     Hettinger was processed on the charges and was released on a summons complaint, pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
