PHILADELPHIA, PA.- A 23-year-old Philadelphia, Pennsylvania man will be spending over the next decade in federal prison after being sentenced last Thursday in connection with the gunpoint carjacking that occurred during the late afternoon hours on February 17, 2022, in the Mantua neighborhood of North Philadelphia.

According to U.S. Attorney David Metcalf, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Kavon Coleman, 23, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Juan R. Sanchez to 121 months in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to federal carjacking and firearms offenses.

On December 7, 2023, a Federal Grand Jury for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania returned an indictment charging Coleman with one count of Carjacking; Aiding and Abetting; and one count of Using, Carrying, and Brandishing a Firearm During a Crime of Violence. On July 9, 2024, Coleman pleaded guilty to the indictment after the jurors had been selected and seated for the trial.

According To Charging Documents Filed With District Court

According to the charging documents filed with the District Court, on February 17, 2022, Coleman and an accomplice committed a gunpoint carjacking of a woman who was sitting in her car waiting for a food order on the 3300 Block of Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When shortly around 5:00 p.m., Coleman and his accomplice approached the woman brandishing handguns.

Coleman’s accomplice pointed a handgun directly at the woman, demanding her keys, while Coleman jumped into the driver’s seat of her car. The two then drove off in her car.

The next day, Coleman and others engaged Police Officers in a high-speed pursuit in a different carjacked vehicle and crashed into another vehicle during the pursuit. Police Officers ultimately located the handgun used in the carjackings tossed by Coleman. The handgun had no serial number, commonly known as a “Ghost Gun,” along with other evidence resulting in the returning of the indictment and the successful prosecution of Coleman.
