MEMPHIS, TN.- Last Thursday, a 25-year-old Memphis, Tennessee, man learned he would be spending the next three-and-a-half years in federal prison after being sentenced for possessing a Glock handgun that had been converted into a fully automatic machine gun.
On Thursday, May 22, 2025, Kalen Thompson, 25, of Memphis, Tennessee, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee and was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Sheryl H. Lipman to 40 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his February 2025 guilty plea one count of Unlawful Possession of a Machine Gun.
According to Interim U.S. Attorney Joseph C. Murphy and charging documents filed with the District Court, on September 15, 2023, Detectives with the Memphis Police Department went to an address in Memphis, Tennessee, in search of a robbery suspect.
Detectives Encounter Thompson With Converted Glock Handgun
Upon arrival, Detectives encountered Thompson under the carport area at the residence in possession of a 9mm Glock pistol that had been modified with a conversion device, “Switch,” which made the handgun fully automatic. During a subsequent records check, Detectives learned that Thompson had stolen the handgun in January 2023 and added the conversion device sometime after that.
