TEANECK, NJ.- On Friday, a 57-year-old Teaneck, New Jersey, woman was taken into custody and charged in connection with an embezzlement scheme that bilked a Bergen County non-profit organization out of tens of thousands of dollars.

According to Bergen County Mark Musella, that on Friday, May 30, 2025, following an investigation, Karen A. McEvoy was formally charged with one count of third-degree Theft by Deception; third-degree Criminal Impersonation; and third-degree Forgery. McEvoy was processed on the charges and was released on a summons complaint, pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.

The charges stem from an investigation that began in February 2025, when the Teaneck Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit after receiving a report regarding the alleged theft of funds from a non-profit organization based in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Detectives Uncover $36,000 Theft

During the ensuing investigation, Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Teaneck Police Department uncovered that a volunteer of the organization, McAvoy, committed theft by deception by writing unauthorized checks from the organization’s bank account that she then deposited into her personal bank account.

The investigation additionally uncovered that McAvoy assumed the identity of another member of the organization and forged signatures on the checks to perpetrate her fraud. The amounts of the checks fraudulently written totaled just around $36,000.
