Camden County Jail Inmate Charged In Beating Death Of Fellow Inmate

CAMDEN, NJ.- On Tuesday, Detectives of the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit formally charged a 29-year-old Camden, New Jersey, man, currently an inmate housed in the Camden County Jail, in connection with last week’s deadly assault that claimed the life of a fellow inmate inside the jail.
According to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay, on Friday, June 13, 2025, Detectives of the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit were notified of the death of an inmate at the Camden County Correctional Facility. The inmate, identified as Edward D. Brooks, 42, of Newark, Delaware, had been found unresponsive shortly before 8:00 a.m. on his bunk inside his jail cell.
Mr. Brooks was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where, despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Brooks was pronounced deceased shortly after 8:45 a.m.
Detectives Identify Shields From Jail Video Footage
Following the review of jail video surveillance and interviewing jail staff, Detectives determined that Shaquan Shields, 29, of Camden, New Jersey, currently detained in the Camden Correctional Facility, struck Mr. Brooks multiple times with a closed fist during a physical altercation. The assault was determined to have resulted in injuries that led to Mr. Brooks’ death. The assault was determined to have occurred shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
Accordingly, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, Shields was formally charged with one count of second-degree Manslaughter. Shields was processed on the charge and will remain detained in the Camden County Correctional Facility, pending future court proceedings in Camden County Superior Court.
