Paterson Man Sentenced For Sexual Assault Of A Child & Attempted Sexual Assault of a Woman

PATERSON, NJ.- A 74-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man, and an apparent sexual predator, learned he could die in New Jersey State Prison after being sentenced on Thursday to over a decade in prison for sexually assaulting a child back in 2004, and attempting to sexually assault a woman back in 2007, in Haledon, New Jersey.
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdez, on January 7, 2020, a woman reported to the Haledon Police Department that she had been sexually assaulted by Muniru Owe, 74, of Paterson, New Jersey, when she was around five to six years of age, from around 2004 to 2006. Subsequently, a second woman came forward and reported being sexually assaulted by Owe, around 2006 to 2008, when she was around 19 to 22 years of age. Both female victims were sexually abused at a home in Haledon, New Jersey.
Owe Convicted In February 2025 Of Sex Crimes
On February 24, 2025, following a trial in Passaic County Superior Court before Superior Court Judge Marybel Mercado-Ramirez, a jury found Owe guilty of one count of second-degree Sexual Assault; one count of third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child; and one count of second-degree Attempted Sexual Assault.
On Thursday Judge Mercado-Ramirez Senteces Owe To Prison
On Thursday, June 26, 2025, Owe appeared in Passaic County Superior Court and was sentenced by Judge Mercado-Ramirez to 12 years in State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which will require Owe to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole. If granted parole, Owe will be around 85 years old when he is released from prison. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Mercado-Ramirez additionally sentenced Owe to be subject to parole supervision for life and register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law restraints.

Passaic County Prosecutor Valdes commended the investigative work of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, the Haledon Police Department, and Assistant Prosecutor Monica Martini for the investigation, which led to the successful prosecution of Owe.
