ASHLAND, KY.- A 25-year-old Flatwoods, Kentucky, man will be spending the next nine-and-a-half years in federal prison after being sentenced on Monday on a federal child pornography offense.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Paul McCaffrey, on Monday, July 7, 2025, Geoffrey Potts, 25, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky and was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning to 114 months in federal prison, to be followed by 15 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to Receipt of Child Pornography.

According Court Documents

According to charging documents filed with the District Court, in March 2024, law enforcement Investigators received information that an individual was utilizing the internet to view, download, and possess digital images and video files depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of children. During the ensuing investigation, Investigators linked the IP address to Potts’ residence in Flatwoods, Kentucky.

During the execution of a court-authorized search warrant of Potts’ residence, Investigators seized Potts’ cellular phone and uncovered numerous digital images and video files depicting child pornography. During a subsequent forensic examination of Potts’ cellular phone, Investigators uncovered a total of over 219 digital images and 45 video files of young children engaging in sexually explicit conduct on the phone.

Acting U.S. Attorney McCaffrey commended the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Kentucky State Police, and the Ashland Police Department, which led to the successful prosecution of Potts.
