WASHINGTON, DC.- On Tuesday, a 70-year-old Northeast, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with the May 1999 brutal rape and stabbing death of a 24-year-old woman inside her Northeast, D.C., apartment.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Friday, May 21, 1999, shortly after 5:30 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s First District responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting an unresponsive person inside an apartment located on the 400 Block of F Street in Northeast, D.C.
Police Officers Find Ms. Gvengros Deceased In Her Apartment
Upon arrival, Police Officers discovered a woman, later identified as Susan Cvengros, 24, of Northeast, D.C., inside an apartment, having succumbed to multiple stab wounds. Ms. Cvengros was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene by members of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services.
Following a post-mortem examination, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the Cause of Death to be multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso, and the Manner of Death to be Homicide. During the initial investigation, Detectives collected various evidentiary items, including DNA from Ms. Cvengros’s bed sheets and nightgown.
For More Than Two Decades Detectives Continued The Investigation
For more than two decades, the Police were unable to make an arrest in the case, but after reopening the case, a breakthrough came when additional DNA analysis results came back in October 2024, linking George Mudd, 70, of Northeast, D.C., who was known to Ms. Gvengros and had seen him on multiple occassions. Although Detectives initially questioned Mudd and considered him a person of interest, they were unable to tie him to the sexual assault and murder of Ms. Gvengros.
After receiving the DNA profile linking Mudd to the murder, Detectives filed charges against Mudd, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Mudd. Following being taken into custody, Mudd was formally charged with first-degree Murder While Armed.
Mudd was processed on the charge and remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility, where, according to court records, he is being held without bond pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 30, 2025, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
