ATLANTIC CITY, NJ.- A 26-year-old Atlantic City, New Jersey, man could be facing at least two decades in New Jersey State Prison after being charged on Tuesday in connection with allegedly beating, Torturing, and killing multiple stray cats in and around his Atlantic City neighborhood.

According to Atlantic County Prosecutor William E. Reynolds, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Edwin Sanabia, 26, of Atlantic City, New Jersey, was taken into custody and charged with 13 counts of third-degree Animal Cruelty. Sanabia was processed on the charges and was released on a summons complaint pending future court proceedings in Atlantic County Superior Court in Mays Landing, New Jersey.

Charges Stems From An Investigation After Cats Were Killed

The charges stem from an investigation that began when the Atlantic City Police Department received information from area residents that Sanabia was beating, torturing, and killing stray cats in his neighborhood. Acting on the information the department received, an Atlantic City Police Officer, who is also a trained Humane Law Enforcement Investigator, launched an investigation into the allegations.

During the ensuing investigation, the Investigator uncovered that Sanabia would lure the abandoned and stray cats in his neighborhood into his residence with food. The investigation further discovered that after luring the cats, Sanabia would then beat, torture, and kill the stray cats. He would then dispose of their bodies by throwing them in a nearby dumpster.

Sanabia is also charged with other acts of animal cruelty by allegedly punching, hitting, and dragging other cats by their tail. Additionally, he is charged with allegedly beating several cats with sticks while they were hiding in a makeshift shelter on a neighbor’s property.

Anyone with additional information regarding this investigation or other crimes is asked to contact the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office at (609) 909-7800, or you can leave information on the Prosecutor’s Office website at www.acpo.tips, and provide information by filling out the form anonymously on the Submit a Tip page.
