According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, on Monday, July 21, 2025, Erik Umana, 39, of Union City, New Jersey, was charged by Detectives of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force with second-degree Possession of Child Pornography. Umana was arrested at the Essex County Correctional Facility, where his currently being detained on an unrelated matter.

The Charges Stem From An Investigation

The charge stems from an investigation that began in April 2025, when members of the Prosecutor’s Office’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a CyberTip that Umana was storing media files depicting child pornography on his cellular phone.

A subsequent court-authorized data search of the cellular device led Detectives to recover over 1,000 digital images and video files depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of children.

If convicted at trial, Umana faces up to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison, and as a result of a conviction, Umana would be subject to parole supervision for life and be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law registration requirements.

Umana first came under suspicion of authorities, following a three-month investigation into online child pornography activities, and was taken into custody in December 2016, and charged at that time with distribution and possession of child pornography.
